Local Spicery is a California-native spice milling business owned and operated by husband and wife duo Nicholas Davoren and Evelyn Wood. Local Spicery offers a variety of all-natural, made-to-order gourmet spices and seasoning blends that are milled, blended, packaged, and sold at the peak of freshness.

For the past several years, Local Spicery has been delivering on the needs of spice-lovers across
the nation with a basic website design—and that was working. However, the team at Local Spicery recently
realized the value in embracing a new era of innovation—one that would take its store, service, and (web)
site to the next level.

To make good on its goal, Local Spicery renovated their long-running brick-and-mortar location in Tiburon,
California and added an all-new, state-of-the-art showroom and milling facility in Marysville. But,
it didn’t stop there…

To keep up with the new influx of business that was sure to result from the company’s expansion to a
second location, the team contacted NX with a need for a customized ecommerce website solution.
They wanted a site that mirrored the savviness and sophistication of their physical stores—so that’s
exactly what we delivered.

The work

An ode to the past and the future.

When Local Spicery partnered with us, they knew exactly what they wanted: an ecommerce website with illustrations, typography, and design inspired by the Victorian era. To deliver on this request, we knew that we had to make the site’s details as tasteful as the sincere and signature history of the spices the company sells to its loyal customers. Happily accepting the challenge, we set out on a mission to bring the past into the present.

For the other end of the spectrum, we incorporated a mix of future-proof, forward-thinking elements into Local Spicery’s new ecommerce design. These aspects were designed to overcome geographical, functional, and informational limitations faced by its previous site. Specifically, we delivered an ecommerce solution that boasts automated browsing, selection, and checkout processes, categorized product offerings, improved on-site search, and of course, mobile-friendly design.

At the center of the Local Spicery experience is the option to browse and blend spices as one pleases. Taking the company’s commitment to providing a quality product and pairing it with the need to make the website incredibly convenient for each customer, we were able to ensure that the online experience was as enjoyable as the spices themselves.

The ecommerce solution delivered by NX to Local Spicery included:

– A customized WordPress theme that communicates the passion and purpose of the Local Spicery brand, its people, and its products

– A Victorian-inspired design with custom fonts, color palettes, icon sets, and background design

– WooCommerce integration that delivers full ecommerce capabilities
A custom-built product library that enables website visitors to easily browse spices and seasonings

– Square payment gateway integration that allows for a simple, smooth, and seamless payment experience

– MailChimp newsletter integration for building and maintaining website subscription lists

– Custom product categories and tags for seamless navigation between different products

– A custom admin dashboard that makes importing and uploading new products a breeze for the Local Spicery team

The final layer of this incredible project was the creation of a custom SEO plan that would help Local Spicery rank higher for primary keywords, and in turn, drive more traffic to the new website.
